I was born in Taos and have lived here all of my life, except for four years of service in the Navy.
I have done work for three different churches in New Mexico. In one church I built three exterior doors. In another church I worked with another artisan to build two exterior doors with carvings of Santos (Saints) on the door panels. For the the third church I made painted and carved figures (Santos) of the Stations of the Cross.
From 1980 until now most of my work has been building furniture and cabinets. Some are carved and painted. The major part of my works have been sold through CFT Décor and Gifts

Pedro Chavez has been associated with Country Furnishings of Taos, now CFT Décor and Gifts for over 30 years. Building, painting and carving are a few of his many talents. The new sign we recently put up on Paseo del Pueblo Norte was built, and painted by Pedro - a definite attraction that brings in more customers.
Pedro can carve anything. An example is the pine needle and pine cone carved cupboard shown here. The customer owned a beautiful metal sculpture of a pine bough and wanted a cupboard carved to match. They were very pleased with his rendition.

In the early 1990's Country Furnishings of Taos submitted photos of Pedro's work to Absolut Vodka. Pedro was selected, along with a handful of other Southwest artists, to carve a work of art for Absolut Vodka. The two chairs pictured below were the fantastic result. Pedro received the letter below thanking him for his contribution to Aboluts' success. The chairs remain in the Absolut collection in Sweden.
